Research Help (Tips & Tricks)

10/1/2019

by C J Bahr
Recently I was asked to speak to the Santa Clarita Romance Writers on the importance of research.  I accepted and had a most wonderful time.

During my own prep for the topic I reached out to several fellow authors for their input and their responses were amazing.

Many had expressed interest in being able to read the presentation since they would not be able to attend.  So I decided to have it available here for those who would like a chance to find out what amazing tips and tricks I uncovered.

Until next time....

Well done, CJ! I'm sure your presentation was a grand success. What creative researching ideas, too--- I had no idea that ancestry.com had Sears catalogues available!

One I just used to check the moon phase in September 1962...http://templatecalendar.com/moon/

Happy hunting to all!

I, too, was surprised by the info on the ancestry website. I'll have to add the moon information if I'm ever asked to present again. Thanks for the new tip!

Thanks! It's always a bit nerve racking to public speak, but when I do and have everyone happy in the end, it makes up for the butterflies in my stomach!

Thank you CJ for sharing your most helpful presentation. My love of history and romance books were the perfect marriage for my writing enduvours. I write 19th Century American historical romance. Thanks to you, I now have several new resource places to refer to. Happy writing

Thank you. When I pen the story of my Irish grandmother arriving in New York in 1902, I know where to search for tantalizing details. Excellent work.

I know, right? There are some great gems I discovered while researching for my presentations. Fellow authors are amazing!

Nicely done, CJ! Generous of you to share. You covered the bases well. The only thing I could add is sitting down with a librarian for a chat. I regularly meet with a local special collections librarian who is amazing with local history where my books are set. She's always happy to help. All good things!

I actually would have added sitting down to chat as well (it's tough when I could have probably talk everyone's ears off!) Librarians, even in this day and age are still a defacto resource.

Never thought of Ancestry.com, but have used YouTube numerous times. I write YA/NA so I spend a lot of time on campus websites and Google Earth. Student boards give me favorite locales to eat and hang out. And lets me kind of relive my youth again. Thank you for sharing.
