Character Interview:  Laurel Saville

Paranormal Life:  Welcome, Laurel.  I’m so pleased you could join us.

Laurel Saville:  Thank you.  I’m a little nervous.  I’ve never been interviewed before.

Today I’m interviewing Laurel, the soon-to-be heroine of Walking Through Fire.  She’s graciously taking time off from her job at the Chicago Field Museum to answer a few questions.

PL:  Relax.  Have fun.  I’ve decided to shake things up and go all James Lipton on you.  These won’t be typical questions, so just say the first things that pop into your head.

LS:  Oh, sure, no pressure what so ever <laughing>.

PL:  So here we go… What’s your favorite curse word?

LS:  Really?  Wow.  That’s your first question?  Um…  Asshat?  I think it’s a great combination, and says it all.

PL:  If you had a free day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?

LS:  Hmmm… I’d go horseback riding.  I never really have time to go riding anymore.  It’s a great escape.  All worries and thoughts just melt away when I’m in the saddle.

PL:  Are you lucky?

LS:  Sometimes.

PL:  Tell me about your best friend.

LS:  Finally, an easy one!  My best friend is Beth Murray.  She was my next door neighbor when I was a kid growing up in Wisconsin.  We’ve stayed friends since we were six!  I’m actually planning a trip to Scotland to visit.  I managed to miss her wedding.  She married a Scotsman and lives there now.  I haven’t seen her in a year, and can’t wait.  I’ve so missed her.

PL:  Describe your ideal date.

LS:  My guy would surprise me by stopping by my office at the end of the day and drag me away from that “one more thing I have to finish”, and I’d not feel guilty about it.  He’d take me to dinner.  It wouldn’t have to be fancy, but the food would be great and I’d have his undivided attention.  Then afterwards, we’d go somewhere to walk hand in hand, enjoying each other and chatting like old friends.  He’d drop me off at home and give me an awesome goodnight kiss.  <laughs>  I know, it’s kind of cheesy and clichéd.

PL:  If you could spend the day with someone you admire (living, dead, or imaginary), who would you pick?

LS:  Yikes!  Too many choices… Xenophon.  He’s an ancient Greek historian and philosopher from the 4th century.  He was really quite the free thinker and adventurous soul back then.  He preserved Socratic dialogues and served in the army of the Persian prince, Cyrus the Younger, and he even joined the Spartan army which caused him to be exiled from Athens. He just seems really cool.  Oh wow, I’m such a history geek!

PL:  What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

LS:  I always wanted to be an artist, but I can’t even draw stick figures well.

PL:  If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

 LS:  Well done!

PL:  Last question, and you’re off the hot seat.  What motto do you live your life by?

LS:  Whatever your goal, you can get there if you’re willing to work.

Laurel...can I ask a question? What was your first reaction to meeting Simon?

Well Heidi, I tracked Laurel down and the first thing she asked was "which time?"

On the plateau, she thought he was sort of an ass. At the ball, her opinion of him started to change, but she still wasn't all that impressed. Of course, either of those times she really didn't know who he was at the time.

But that stormy night, where he appeared and confessed his true name, she was stunned, attracted and wanted to do all she could to help him.

CJ... I've been reading your blog and Facebook posts...can you tell us (wannabe writers) your process. How did you create this book, develop the characters, and get it to publication.

Wow, Jolene, that's a lot to answer in a comment section!

If you go back to my very first blog post, I explained how I used the "writing contest" path to publishing.

An upcoming blog, so I don't spoil the opening will be coming out after my release date, explaining how I came up with the idea for Walking Through Fire - as a teaser, it came to me in a dream, believe it or not. So keep an eye out for the post.

As for creating characters (what a great idea for another blog post!), the short answer is "it depends". Sometimes I've been very lucky and my character emerges fully realized from inside my mind. Other times, I have to come up with a character's name and then the details fall into line. When I'm really stuck, I think of the city or country my tale is taking place and start to research names and famous people from the area (if any) to start brainstorming.

Thanks Jolene for your interest and the following. It's readers like you that keep me writing!
